Saturday Memory for July 25, 2026
I’m recalling a time in 1950, as I recall, during the off-season in football, when Bob Waterfield of the Los Angeles Rams played with us kids on our street in LA. He was one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League, and it was a lot of fun to have him play with us. I can’t remember why he was in our neighborhood, but it was a joy, for sure. I was not yet 12. I recall him being very funny and full of humor. As teens, or almost teens, we were impressed that he was married to Jane Russell.
I was born probably 2 1/2 years after this took place for you. It was such a different time. LA and the 50s was breathtaking. I would not call Los Angeles breathtaking now. I would call it more like trying to take your breath from you! We were born there were very lucky. It was a beautiful place to grow up and people did things like this. My family lived just up the street from the Gene Autry ranch in Laurel Canyon. And he would have the kids in the neighborhood come up there and give them ice cream and let them taste the honey from his hives. You don’t see that anymore. Pretty much anywhere. Nice memory.
