<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In my yet unfinished novel (Dreams: The Final Heresy<\/em>), one of the darker characters is The\nFaceless Monk. He is Cardinal Broga\u2019s right hand man, his fixer. When I am\nactively writing, I write from what I call imaginal space. The characters\noccupy this space and I can see them and hear them. Since I do not plot or\noutline or write from conscious expectations or ideas, I am mostly in the\nposition of a kind of scribe. The imaginal contents take the lead in what gets\nwritten down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Recently, I awoke from a nap experiencing either a receding\ndream or a hypnopompic image. The image was The Faceless Monk and he announced\nthat there would be major and disastrous cyber attacks in 2019. The image\npierced me with an intensity difficult to describe. The fictional character was\nclearly referring to an outer reality and not to a time point or theme of the\nnovel. I wondered how this would change my experience of The Faceless Monk when\nI return to writing the next scenes of the novel. So, here we have a fictional character,\nentering a dream (or vision) and announcing future events in the \u201creal\u201d (outer)\nworld. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What is the psychological status of such a phenomenon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n In my experience, I do not question the \u201creality\u201d of a\ndream, vision, imaginal space, or things I experience of the outer world. They\nare all real experiences<\/em>. The issue\nfor me is not the reality status of experiences of any kind, but more the nature\nof the eros relation to any<\/em> experience\n(regardless of source) and what I do<\/em>\nin response to such experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I am aware of the dire warnings of cyber security specialists\nabout the inevitability<\/em> of major\ncyber security attacks. As well, I experience the dire warning of The Faceless\nMonk. The latter warning pierces me more deeply and in response, I not only\nwant to write this brief note, but to prepare for the likelihood of coming\ncyber disasters. I have my own fantasies as to what these might be as I\u2019m sure\nyou will have as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The ontological nature of The Faceless Monk and his\nknowledge of future events in the world falls readily into the nature of prophetic\nintelligence. How this comes to be is unclear. Like Pirandello\u2019s characters in\nsearch of an author, fictional characters, like dream characters, can function as\nautonomous beings outside of and independent of ego consciousness.
