His cane was not a proper cane
\njust a stick\u2014well a branch to be
\nexact, should exactness be
\nrequired in such matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I learned his name was “Z”
\nbecause he was always last
\nto be chosen or to hear the news.
\nLast and lost, he repeated, smiling.<\/p>\n

What are those notches?
\nDays when something good happens.
\nAnd the bad days?
\nMan, nothing big enough for that.<\/p>\n

Could I try out your memory cane?
\nNo one ever interested before
\nFeels good, nice heft
\nI think I’ll make me one.<\/p>\n

Now that’s a good thing
\nWorth two notches I’d say
\nGood luck in finding yours
\nMr. Z, you are first in my book!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
