I started up a conversation with him and he talked about the dying art of hand-lettering, but that it was important for me to see him doing this as a message. He said what I needed to see was Ghiberti&#8217;s doors at the Baptistery of Saint John  in Florence. It had taken him 13 years. I was so struck by this idea of really taking time to do something, that I thanked him and walked out of the building, completely forgetting my appointment. By the time I returned, the old man was gone and I made a vow to see the Baptistry in Florence.
