I met him there

there on the sidewalk

sitting against the wall
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

of the ramshackle bar
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Bedraggled one would say
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

in describing his condition
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

his weathered cardboard sign
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

declaring “Anything\u2026God bless”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“You’re the dream doc, aren’t you?”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

he announced, extending his hand
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

shaking it, I said, “Yes, how did you know?”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“They say you always wear owl shirts.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Yes, it’s true. My totem animal. You have one?”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“What’s a totem?” I sat down beside him.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Well, if you were an animal, what would you be?”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hey man, I’m just a bum. They call me Crazy Gus.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Well, Mr. Crazy Gus, do you dream of any animals?”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Nah, I can’t remember dreams worth shit, no\u2026nothing.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Wait. Awhile back, months maybe. It was an elephant.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

It was standing on its hind legs and it was a funny blue.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Must have been the stuff I was using. Crazy, like they call me.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“OK Gus, for now, your totem is a blue elephant. Name him.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

“Max. Just popped in my head when you asked. Max. Yes.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I got up, shook hands, and said, keep Max close. Mr. Gus.”
