My dad and I were at Hollywood Park to see Citation (our favorite horse) run in the Hollywood Gold Cup. We were at the finish line and when Citation crossed the finish he became the first million dollar horse. My dad and I danced as he crossed the line. It was the last time I danced with my dad. I knew (somehow) that this was the end of my childhood. This was confirmed later that summer, when I read Salinger\u2019s Catcher in the Rye, which came out on July 16, two days after Citations&#8217; thrilling finish.
