\n

Humanity is failing in many ways, not the least of which is the failure to be an effective steward of resources, whether those resources are economic, social, cultural, scientific, artistic, or anything else. At bottom, this is nothing less than suicidal. For the first time, Homo sapiens are facing extinction, and much of the impetus for this ineluctable reality is the result of our own unbounded hubris.<\/span><\/p>\n

One resource so far exempt from this ubiquitous mayhem is what happens when our ego\u00a0consciousness\u00a0and our body become paralyzed. I am referring to <\/span>dreams. <\/span><\/i>The likely reason for this exemption is that for the vast majority of individuals, collectives, and organizations, this resource is ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dreams are a resource <\/span>other than<\/span><\/i> conscious\u00a0intentions,\u00a0and for this reason are likely to be the source of \u201coutside the box\u201d ways of being,\u00a0doing,\u00a0and functioning. Where dreams are an object of attention, most of this attention is interpreting,\u00a0explaining,\u00a0or trying to understand dreams only in\u00a0relation\u00a0to consciousness. This is not the most fruitful way of working with dreams. The \u201cotherness\u201d of dreams requires recapturing the early sense of dreams as \u201calien.\u201d So, to relate to dreams would be relating to an <\/span>other<\/span><\/i>. In this mutuality, this eros potentiality, the ego may find ways of \u201cserving\u201d the hints and possibilities presented by the other<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recall the scene in <\/span>The Day When the Earth\u00a0Stood\u00a0Still<\/span><\/i>. Klatu, the alien,\u00a0holds up\u00a0a\u00a0device,\u00a0but the military decides it\u2019s a\u00a0weapon, destroys\u00a0it,\u00a0and injures Klatu. It was a gift from the alien for the president to be able to\u00a0understand life in the universe. This scene provides a riveting example of\u00a0wrongheadedness\u00a0in the face of the <\/span>other. <\/span><\/i>It also mirrors how most humans treat the gift of dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
