Russ, both John Cage and Miles Davis (and many other creative luminaries) have maintained that there is no such thing as silence. Miles Davis said: “In music, silence is more important than sound.” Cage’s 4’33” silent piece was meant precisely to allow ‘the other’ in. In his case, it was the ambient sounds inside and outside the concert room that were as important as the piece because those sounds were alive and constantly changing. I would imagine that Origine’s comment goes deeper than that, alluding to a presence that has great potency and meaning.
